PVAMU Wellness in Houston is a partnership with the Texas A&M University System, Prairie View A&M University, and Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Complete Communities Initiative.

PVAMU Wellness in Houston’s mission is to address health disparities and food insecurities by promoting health, wellness, and nutrition to limited-resource communities in the Greater Houston area, ultimately encouraging healthy, long-term lifestyle changes and behaviors.

PVAMU Wellness in Houston comprises of four of PVAMU’s colleges that work collaboratively to curate programming that stems from a portfolio of educational, healthcare assessment, and outreach programs. These four colleges are: The College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, the College of Nursing, the College of Juvenile Justice and Psychology, and the College of Business.

2. Improve healthy self-care practices through screenings, assessments and referrals.

3. Provide workshops and educational opportunities focused on parenting and family support.

4. Improve access to healthy foods.

Our Objective Statement

Our objective is to encourage families and individuals to adopt healthy lifestyle choices through outreach, assessments and non-formal educational programs. Our programs are geared toward raising awareness about healthy-living programs and health-service available to residents. Through education workshops, residents learn how food and other factors impact health, how to prevent and control diseases, and enhance family resource management.

PVAMU Wellness in Houston connected with over 12,000 children, students, adults, and seniors through our customized educational programs, community events, workshops, program planning, and volunteering. Out of the 12,000 contacts Healthy Houston has made, 8,500 contacts attended one of our educational curricula programs.

Within the first year of PVAMU Wellness in Houston’s launch, it has cultivated and fostered over 50 new partnerships with local organizations within the Houston area. Community partnerships including Universities, hospitals, Independent School Districts, Churches and Professional organizations.

In the greater Houston area, PVAMU Wellness in Houston has constructed, restored, and/or revitalized 5 community gardens, making it accessible to the residents within its community. Healthy Houston has a goal to complete an addition 10 gardens over the next 2 years, aiding in our mission to address food insecurities.

In collaboration with PVAMU College of Nursing and Custom Care Pharmacy, PVAMU Wellness in Houston has administered over 1,500 Pfizer and Moderna vaccinations throughout the Houston area.
