January 13 – An Agricultural Literacy program was conducted in the El Paso County at Montana Vista Elementary to grade levels Pre-K through 5th. The program was a huge success! A total of 571 youth and 38 adults participated in the one-day event. Youth participated in stations such as master naturalist, vegetables, livestock, honey/bees, beef, and mobile dairy. Each station, except the mobile dairy, was 18 minutes long. The mobile dairy was 40 minutes long because of the amount of time the kids needed to learn about cow production. The youth were educated on beef production, pumpkins harvesting, goats, and how they are fed, the productions and the necessity of bees, and the different types of animals master naturalist study. Only 3rd through 5th grade were given a post-test and asked a series of agricultural questions pertaining to each of the presentations. Most of the youth strongly agreed that agriculture is essential. The teachers and youth stated they enjoyed each station and were amazed by the baby goats. Some even got to feed the baby goats!
