Oct 3, 2018 – Mr. Lindsey Weatherspoon was born on August 4, 1924 in Cairo, Georgia. He attended Washington High School in Cairo and graduated in 1941. He served in the US Army for about 3 years from 1943 to early 1946 where he achieved the rank of Sergeant and received several decorations before being honorably discharged.

After his time in the military, Weatherspoon attended Savannah State College in Savannah, Georgia where he earned his B.S. in Agriculture in 1948. He then went on to study Animal Sciences and veterinary medicine at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas and received his M.S. in Animal Sciences in 1953.

Upon graduation, Mr. Weatherspoon began working as a county agent in Brunswick, Georgia, but soon moved to Pittsburg to pursue a position with Swift Packing Company. He then moved to Texas because of a strong recommendation to him by one his professors at Kansas State that he become a professor of Meat and Animal Sciences at Prairie View A&M University. Following the advice of his professor, he began teaching at Prairie View in September of 1953.

Mr. Weatherspoon is credited with the expansion of the Meat Sciences Laboratory at Prairie View. He was responsible for acquiring the necessary equipment for slaughtering and processing beef cattle and hogs in the Meat Lab. Most of the processed meat was sold to the dining hall and people in the community to generate funds for the University.

Mr. Lindsey Weatherspoon worked at PVAMU for nearly 60 years. Throughout his extensive and distinguished career at Prairie View he received much recognition and many awards for his teaching and outstanding service, such as, the Outstanding Black Agriculture Scientist Award, the Outstanding Teaching Award, the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Award, the Agriculture Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Certificate of Appreciation for Academic Excellence.

During his career he became part of several professional organizations, such as, the American Meat Association, American Society of Animal Science, International Institute of Food technology, Southwest Meat Association, Institute of Food Technology- State Section, Prairie View Chamber of Commerce, Prairie View Athletic Club, Prairie View A&M Local Alumni Club, Waller County Small Farm Co-op, and Council for Agricultural Science and Technology.

Mr. Lindsey Weatherspoon is highly regarded as one of the most influential and productive Agriculture professors and researchers to ever work at PVAMU. He is remembered for making many key contributions to the function and success of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences at PVAMU.
