October 1, 2018 – In keeping with Frederick Douglass’ life of public service and commitment to equity and access, the Frederick Douglass Institute of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education offers the Fredrick Douglass Global Fellowship, in an effort to make study abroad accessible to students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSI). Through the fellowship, 100% of a recipients’ program fees and travel costs are covered for an intensive 4-week, 3-credit summer study abroad program designed to enhance their leadership and intercultural skills. Frederick Douglass Global fellows commit to sharing their experience and intercultural growth with peers and classmates.
Ten scholarships are awarded annually based on a combination of financial need, academic achievement, and nominations from students’ MSI presidents. For 2019, Prairie View A&M University’s only applicant is Agriculture and Human Science major, Morgan Green.
MONDAY MINUTE: How did you become interested in agriculture and animal science?
MORGAN: It is my career goal to become a veterinarian. I chose reach this goal by studying agriculture through which to receive the credits because animals are my passion. Agriculture provides the proper route for me to be able to apply for veterinary school and have various paths to take within the animal science and health field.
MONDAY MINUTE: Why is animal science important to you?
MORGAN: Animal science is important to me because I want to be more aware of the treatment of animals within our agricultural industry. Through learning about what all is involved at slaughter houses, on dairy farms, and at other agricultural resources, I will become better-informed of what it would take to properly reduce the amount of suffering animals are forced to endure.
MONDAY MINUTE: How will the Frederick Douglas Fellowship Program benefit your studies?
MORGAN: I want to be a fellow in this program so that I can represent my university in a positive way. I want to shed light on why Prairie View is so special and the opportunities the students of this university have at their availability.
MONDAY MINUTE: What is your ultimate career goal?
MORGAN: After graduating with my degree in Agriculture, I will attend and graduate from veterinary school. I plan to practice veterinary medicine working in poverty-stricken areas and assisting with the population such as stray animals and companion animals.
