April 23, 2018 – Claudia Cannaday of Dayton, Texas stated that her area received 57 inches of rain from Harvey and debris from the storm left several large piles of debris in her yard. It ruined all of the carpet in the house and the drywall throughout the house had to be replaced. Even the floors were ruined and needed new tiling. From August 2017 to February 2018, she and her family had to endure moisture and holes in the roof, thus creating a mold problem.

Following the damage left by Hurricane Harvey, the Cooperative Extension Program partnered with the Dayton Rotary Club of Texas and The Oswego Rotary Club of Illinois to help Cannaday rebuild her home. James Motton, CEP extension agent, jumped into action with two dozen Rotarians who converged on the home in multiple vehicles, each bearing some piece of equipment ready to work.

The volunteers began working to clean up the property and repair the damaged home. Two huge dumpsters were quickly filled with debris from the yard and inside the damaged home. Together, everyone removed and replaced drywall, performed mold remediation, installed insulation, hung doors, painted and hauled debris. The project was completed in one day, which happened to be her birthday, and that definitely put a smile on her face. She not only received a freshly painted bedroom and doors, her entire bedroom was furnished as well. The project was a great success with an operational cost of $15,636.38 including supplies, materials, supplies, labor and services.
