The federal government and the states established an infrastructure for publicly funded agricultural research through the United States to conduct research and ultimately, to transfer results to the public. The collective results of these legislative acts created the 133 land grant colleges and universities in existence today.

USDA has had a special relationship with institutions of higher education. The granting agency, the National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA), was established to fuel the technological advances required to keep US agriculture strong and competitive.

Cooperative Agricultural Research Center (CARC) Research Scientist Dr. Adela Mora-Gutierrez has been selected as a member of the 2017 1890 Institution Teaching, Research and Extension Capacity Building Grants (CBG) Program Research Review Panel, which is being hosted by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). By joining USDA-NIFA in this process, Dr. Mora-Gutierrez and a group of selected Panelists helped identify meritorious projects for Federal funds for deserving institutions. Panelists met in Washington DC on September 26-29, 2017.
