On July 21, 2016, Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy, Director of USDA’s NIFA, presented a seminar to the University community on “Societal Changes and Nutritional Security.” Sharing what he termed “Existential Threats” with an audience of over 100, Ramaswamy stressed societal issues that affect nutritional security, from growing populations, health trends, and climate change, to food waste and increasing pressures on water resources. Ramaswamy emphasized that society must address these challenges now to ensure a shared future.

Following the question-and-answer session, Dr. James M. Palmer, Interim Dean, noted that Ramaswamy’s presentation re-emphasized the importance of the University’s land-grant mission and that strong programming results from increased collaboration among the College’s education, research and extension units.

The seminar was preceded by meetings with various members of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences. Researchers and extension specialists alike shared their work and accomplishments with Director Ramaswamy. No mater the subject, he engaged everyone with thought provoking feedback meant to elevate programming across the state.
