Panther Student-Athletes Continue To Achieve High Marks In Classroom

5/23/2018 12:00:00 PM

Prairie View A&M University student-athletes continue to achieve high marks in the classroom as evidenced by the latest NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) announced Wednesday.

In the 2016-17 report, seven PVAMU teams had perfect scores of 1000: Baseball, Men's Track & Field, Men's Cross Country, Men's Tennis, Softball, Women's Bowling and Women's Cross Country. It is the second consecutive year seven Panther athletics teams earned a perfect score.

All 18 Prairie View A&M athletics teams are above the NCAA mandated multi-year score of 930, and all 18 teams are again postseason eligible in the upcoming 2018-19 athletic year.

Panther Athletics was also awarded 14 delayed graduation points across multiple sports for the 2016-17 academic cycle. Delayed graduation points are points earned for a student-athlete that lost a point at any time during their matriculation.

A total of six teams increased single-year scores from 2015-16 to 2016-17: Baseball, Men's Basketball, Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Women's Soccer and Softball.

"Our student-athletes continue to win academically," said PVAMU Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson. "Our department motto of 'All Out All Game All Season' begins with classroom success, which lays the foundation for competitive success as well as the foundation for professional success in life. President Dr. Ruth Simmons continues to provide key resources to benefit our student-athletes, as well as our compliance and academic services staffs and support their educational efforts. Our coaches are also to be commended for the vital role they play in stressing classroom achievement as well as competitive achievement. We are proud of their continued accomplishments in the classroom. This is another proud day for everyone in PVNation!"

Associate Athletic Director of Student Athlete Support Services Brittney Johnson echoed Robinson's sentiments.

"Academic success at Prairie View A&M University truly is and continues to be a team effort," Johnson said. "Our administration, student-athletes, coaches and staff continue to work as one to help our APR scores continue to improve on a yearly basis. I commend our compliance and academic advising staff for their diligence in helping our student-athletes to be successful. Most importantly, I applaud our student-athletes for their buy-in in trusting the process in achieving academic success."
