PRAIRIE VIEW – Many would say better late than never in the case of the Prairie View A&M Women's Basketball team it was the better as they used a late rally to subdue the Lady Hornets of Alabama State with a 61-58 win inside the William J. Nicks Building on Saturday evening.
The final six minutes could have been any team's game. The Lady Hornets led by as many as eight points with 6:17 left in the game. Suddenly, the script changed, when the Panthers went on an 11-1 run igniting a comeback that lifted PVAMU to a victory.
PVAMU had to fight through 26 turnovers to earn its second straight conference win moving them to a 7-11 overall record and 4-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Alabama State took the opening quarter with a two point lead (19-17), but the pesky Panthers would not go away as they knotted the game prior to the halftime intermission at 29-29.
Again the Panthers scored first coming out of half time taking a four point advantage, but the tune changed when the Lady Hornets broke loose pushing their lead to nine with just under six minutes left in the third quarter. PVAMU chipped away at the Alabama State lead to get within three before closing out the quarter at 48-45.
A couple of turnovers and missed shots led to a 8-0 run for the Lady Hornets, as the Panthers was digging a small ditch for themselves. That's when something turned for PVAMU.
Kennedi Heard came away with some big rebounds and knocked down shots to knot the game at 57-57. For three whole minutes neither team could score, but a couple of
Kirdis Clark free throws sealed it for PVAMU to pull out the victory.
Diana Rosenthal and Clark scored 17 points apiece. Rosenthal finished with three rebounds, three assist and four steals, while Clark had three rebounds, four assist and two steals.
Prairie View will return to action when they host the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M on Monday. The game time is set for 5:30 at the William J. Nicks Baby Dome.
