Pete to Receive SWAC Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award

10/23/2019 10:09:00 AM

PRAIRIE VIEW – One of the most successful individuals in Prairie View A&M athletics history is in line to receive a honor of a lifetime.

Prairie View A&M Interim Athletics Director Alicia Pete has been named one of three recipients of the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference Alumni Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. Pete  will be honored along with a host of league legends and longtime servants as part of the association's Legends Roast and Awards Luncheon.

Pete has served Prairie View A&M from an administrative standpoint since 1999 during which time she balanced duties as head volleyball coach of the Lady Panthers.

During her tenure on the sidelines from 1999-2014, she led the Lady Panthers to two SWAC Championships (1999, 2006) and the team's first two NCAA Tournament appearances in program history, earning Pete SWAC Coach of the Year Honors after each championship.
Pete also holds the distinction of being the first head coach in the history of the Lady Panther Bowling team and briefly served as an assistant softball coach in 2001.

In addition to her status as one of the great coaches in Panther history, the San Antonio native enjoyed a marvelous playing career for the PVAMU volleyball team as a four-year letter winner. She earned All-SWAC honors and was selected to the SWAC All-Tournament team in 1989 and 1990.

For her accomplishments, Pete was inducted into the PVAMU Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 and was enshrined into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2015.

Former Alcorn State hoops standout Larry Smith and former WLBT-TV sportscaster Michael Rubenstein – the latter of whom will be honored posthumously – will join Pete as Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. Former longtime Jackson State golf coach Eddie Payton will be the guest of honor during the roast portion of the event.

Additionally, Grambling State Equipment Manager George Stubbs will receive the Charles "Chuck" Prophet Wagon Master award, which is named for former Mississippi Valley State Sports Information Director Chuck Prophet and is given to an employee of a SWAC member institution that best exemplifies spirit, dedication and loyalty to his or her school.

The event will be held Dec. 20 at noon and will emanate from the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Atlanta.
