Malaria is a life-threatening disease spread to humans by mosquitoes. Despite its deadly trait, malaria is preventable and curable.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Chukwuemeka wants to take his health career to a global level by attending Prairie View A&amp;M University for a master\u2019s degree in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvamu.edu\/spah\/\">health<\/a>. \u201cI wanted more for myself, so I decided to come here,\u201d said the first-generation college student.<\/p>\n<p>Initially from Nkwerre, a town in Southeast Imo State, Nigeria, Chukwuemeka says he wanted to attend PVAMU because it aligned with his future goals. \u201cI chose PVAMU because of its strong commitment to academic excellence, a supportive community and comprehensive programs that align with my career goals in public health.\u201d He praised PVAMU\u2019s \u201cunique blend of academic rigor\u201d and \u201ca culturally rich environment that fosters equity and diversity, as well as personal and professional growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><style The unknown can be startling. If you dive in head first &#8212; the chill may shock you. But, at least you get the hard part out the way\u2026 There is an art to taking calculated risks. Our world thrives on the everyman assuming the safe bet. Those who stretch out of \u201cthe box\u201d carry the burden of pioneering movements, trends, schools of thought. David Landry found a way out of his box. And, from the outside looking in, he decided his box wasn\u2019t all bad. So, he refashioned the box to his liking and invited folks to stand on it, dance on it, pose on it, and even perform on it. This path had been trodden by many before him. Go to college. Get a degree. You\u2019ll be alright. Right? He soon found himself going through the motions. He was turning in assignments which lacked evidence of passion. He maintained his grades but was really buying time until something clicked for him emotionally, creatively. He watched as his classmates and friends got picked up for semester-long internships and job opportunities. He knew something had to change. He pushed through and graduated in 2015 with his Bachelor of Science in Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Following stints as an architectural drafter and visual manager, David began work at Aldine ISD as a visual arts teacher in 2017. Still in search of something more, he began studying the arts of fabrication and manufacturing. Once he figured out how to fit these crafts into his creative outlook, a flame ignited from within. In early 2022, his friend from PV \u2013 rapper Teezo Touchdown (born Aaron Thomas) \u2013 was scheduled as an opening act for rapper Tyler, the Creator\u2019s Call Me IF You Get Lost tour. The tour was in urgent need of a quality set designer. David saw the perfect opportunity to put those good ol\u2019 Prairie View networking skills to use and took his leap of faith\u2026<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the ways in which his time on the Hill contributed to his growth, David stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrairie View gave me the tools that have made me the man and creative I am today. It was there that I learned to discover individuality and embrace community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, David is a full-time artist, focusing on designing and building and looks forward to expanding his Mitchell Reece. It perfumes the psyche with notes of Barbicide\u2014muffler smoke\u2014White Diamonds on church pews. Of collard greens, cornbread and the like. Of dewy grass to be sun kissed\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell\u2019s summer 2023 exhibition at Sanman Studios\u2014 Tears on West Montgomery\u2014may be read as a musing on the aesthetic of family photos. All the things they capture\u2014the sentiments summoned\u2014the memories recalled. They make you miss the good times. They make you think of loved ones long gone. Their smiles immortalized and contained within a frame. Tears tours you through Mitchell\u2019s own photo album. The images found therein are equal parts serene and vibrant. All of them conjuring the pathos of Black life on Houston\u2019s north side \u2013 particularly along the Acres Home section of West Montgomery Road, where Mitchell grew up. A perusal through Tears presents you with such scenes: a father and son bonding over their love for baseball (Big Mitch and Lil Mitch); a purveyor of slab culture (Miller on West Montgomery); bald fades on the stoop (Frederick and Maurice 38); and a celebration of mother figures (Matriarchitect II). Graduating in 2013, Reece\u2019s time on the Hill was occupied not only with studies of Mass Communication, but also parlays with PV\u2019s then burgeoning art community.<\/p>\n<p>Post-grad, Reece left Texas for New York City and enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in pursuit of his masters. He earned his MFA in Fine Art and Design in 2019 and began working with the social media department at the Sugar Hill Children\u2019s Museum of Art &amp; Storytelling. And using those resources to help the less fortunate. I think art is very helpful as a matter of therapy\u2026 I don\u2019t ever want to get to a point where it\u2019s very standoffish and very distant from anyone to have access to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, To grooving with the goal of losing oneself and escaping life\u2019s ills\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Think of dancing as a means of painting a picture. The dancefloor \u2013 the canvas. Your body is the brush. In this sense, Torre\u2019 (pronounced \u201cTour-Ree\u201d) Merricks is an abstractionist. She gathers elements of jazz, tap, and ballet. Contemporary, hip-hop, and majorette stylings find their way into the fold. She then blends these elements to a synergetic conclusion \u2013 resulting in an artistic movement all her own.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 Torre\u2019 graduated from Prairie View A&amp;M University, earning her Bachelor of Science in Biology. During her time on the Hill, she was a member of the Panther Dolls and danced with the team from her freshman year until graduation. During the summer of 2023, she performed with New Orleans hip-hop legends Master P, Choppa, and Big Fav. She then followed up with multiple performances at the Essence Festival of Culture the same year. Malaria is a life-threatening disease spread to humans by mosquitoes.
