I practice digital forensics and learn about all tools or methods that are relevant to the field. I plan on completing my certificates in the near future and making a career as a digital forensic investigator. With everything I have learned from my degree, I will have many great opportunities available to me, but my long-term goals are to utilize my experiences to start my own private investigation firm specializing in digital forensics.

Why does this field interest you?

I have always had an affinity for science and technology, as well as frequently watching true crime media, never imagining that one day I could be a forensics investigator, such as the ones I have been fascinated over. Criminalistics is the application of these methods of science and technology to criminal investigations, and I found this field of study to be exemplary to my own interests.

Why did you choose PVAMU?

I had initially wanted to attend [Texas] A&M for computer science but had been handed a pamphlet detailing the Criminalistics Program offered through PVAMU at the RELLIS campus. I then decided to change my path and was awarded an exciting and fulfilling education at PVAMU. I had the honor of being taught by the most compassionate and knowledgeable professors, making great connections and finding great mentors every step of the way. With these resources available to me and studying a field I was passionate about and captivated in, my education at PVAMU was an experience that could not be matched.

[1957

996,540,994,869,1361,1582,521,374,452,251
post-35649","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-meet-our-graduates
["GET

KiMaja Clay

Hometown:

Houston, Texas

Degree:

Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice

What does being a first-generation college student mean to you?

To me, being a first-gen college student means that I broke many generational curses placed by hardships on those before me.

Which organizations were you a part of at PVAMU? This has been my vision and dream for a long time coming, especially after doing extensive research proposals on the topic and being a witness to the social factors that affect black men in sports.

What was your most outstanding achievement while attending PVAMU?

My greatest achievement while attending PV was being selected for the 2019 Reflecting Black Symposium. I was 1 out of 18 students from schools like University of Houston to Cornell University to attend and present my research on Hyper Masculinity.

What does PVAMU have that other universities do not?

PVAMU has a rich history, raw culture, and it’s a genuine family. As simple as it sounds, I understand it is hard, but let me tell you that the afterward effect is worth it. Take time to recharge yourself, take breaks, and do whatever you have to do to get where you need to be. Put yourself first when it comes to your degree. There is the old Caribbean saying that goes a little like this: “Study ya book cah dem can tek ya book but dem can tek ya education.” It means to study hard because, at the end of the day, they can take away all they want from you, but no matter what you lose, your education is something you can always hold onto.

[1957

1951,1949,1114,996,2457,994,374,363,315,1062,274
post-34988","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-meet-our-graduates
["GET

Lee Alston

Hometown:

Houston

Degree:

Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Management

Are you a first-generation college student? Being a part of these organizations groomed and sharpened me in various ways. I was able to learn my strengths and weaknesses, what I like and don’t like, and how to work effectively in a team. You will always have that helping hand to pick you up. It is also an institution that doesn’t believe in giving handouts, which is perfect for me because I believe in putting in the work to achieve your goals. One hundred percent, PVAMU has shaped me into a man of undeniable faith and resilience.

Plus, I love the fact that PVAMU is in the country. When I lived in Phase 1, I would sit on the balcony and watch the sunset, or I would open my window to let the breeze enter my room. Also, with my help, my younger brother will not have as much difficulty navigating through his college experience. Showing him, and my younger cousins, that hard work pays off is definitely rewarding, and it’s a wonderful feeling of achievement at the end of this marathon.

Why did you want to attend PVAMU?

I first visited the campus during 8th grade for a campus tour. The welcoming environment EVERYWHERE I turned was very inspirational. PVAMU is a home away from home if you will.

What does PVAMU have that other universities do not?

AN AMAZING HISTORY DEPARTMENT! The great professors and advisors I met during my time at PVAMU are a great part of my success. They saw my potential even when I did not think I could continue. I met colleagues that came from very similar backgrounds and made lifetime friends. Seeing them achieve their goals has made me confident that there is no limit.

What is your goal after graduation?

My biggest aspiration is to educate as many children as possible of the vast advantages of attending HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and HSIs (Hispanic-Serving Institutions). It is very important to me that children understand college is not just a degree; it gets you a job. The networking that takes place, especially at HBCUs and HSIs, is marvelous and fundamental in career development.

Any advice to current students?

This is only the beginning. each other and work together to grow and entrench OER in the respective institutions. On 30th July 2019 PVAMU hosted the Houston Area OER Consortium that brought together 40 participants from 12 institutions including: Rice University, PVAMU, University of Houston, Lone Star College, San Jacinto College, OpenStax, University of Houston Downtown, St Thomas, Houston Community College, and University of Houston Clearlake. The goal of the meeting at PVAMU was to develop goals and an official Mission statement for the consortium. Each institution was also encouraged to articulate its OER goals, and participants were also informed of upcoming OER events including the OpenStax Creator Fest that will be hosted by Rice University in March 2020 where faculty members in the Houston area can learn more about OER.

<div aria-live="polite" Engineering an Exciting Future

After an impressive career at Prairie View A&M University, Kiani Sheppard will be graduating summa cum laude with an exciting offer at Raytheon Missile Systems lined up for the fall.

While pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Sheppard was a part of PVAMU’s Women’s Golf Team, Women in STEM, ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society), and NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), in addition to completing two summer internships with Raytheon. Her first internship in 2018 focused on thermal analysis, followed by a summer that emphasized mechanical design in 2019.

“They were the best experiences I could have ever had. None of my family has an engineering background, so to be able to go do real engineering work at such a huge and diverse company really opened my eyes to the possibilities,” Sheppard reflected. “I loved both of my internships and cannot wait to go back in the fall full time.”

Sheppard’s commitment to excellence made PVAMU a natural choice.

“PVAMU has both the drive and resources to help you succeed,” she said. “It helped me get opportunities that I could not have at any other university. I got specialized one-on-one help in my major courses when I needed it, which helped me successfully interview for, acquire, and complete two industry internships. It is a place that pushes you to your limits by showing you all that you can be.”

In addition to her internships, Sheppard was awarded the departmental “Most Outstanding Mechanical Engineer of the Year” award three years in a row and was named MVP of the Women’s Golf Team as a freshman.

During her final year at PVAMU, she was part of a team that designed an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for the summer RoboSub competition. Together, with her five classmates in the Society of Underwater Technologies, and advising Professor Chang Duan, Ph.D., she worked on creating a device that could complete tasks, such as maneuver through an underwater obstacle course and manipulate objects, all without human intervention. Such a project has exciting applications in deep-sea exploration, advancements in shipping, and, most relevant for Sheppard, defense and research developments.

Sheppard expressed gratitude to everyone who helped make her journey a success with an extensive list of accomplishments behind her and an exciting future ahead.

“I would just like to thank my parents and family for all of their support; they are my rock. I would also like to thank my professors, department heads, deans, and support staff. They were amazing throughout my entire career and really helped me become the engineer I am today.” she said.

###
By Marley Crusch

[1957

996,657,2511,2507,1458,2509,2469,464,2512,2506,2262,374,2510,2000,364,342,2513,274,2508,2505
post-34483","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-meet-our-graduates
["GET
