Oscar T. Oviedo

Oscar T. Oviedo is a native Houstonian, and a graduate of Cy-Fair High School. He received a BS in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology from the University of Houston-Downtown, and BA in Sociology from the University of Texas. He earned his MA in Sociology at the University of Houston, where his thesis synthesized his experiences as drummer in a rock band into ethnographic research on DIY touring rock bands. In general, his areas of interests include: Culture, Race and Ethnicity, Social Inequality, Social Justice, Ethnography, and Music. Before coming to Prairie View A & M University, Mr. Oviedo was a Sociology Adjunct within the Lone Star College System, and taught Mexican-American Studies courses at the University of Houston. He has also served as a Research Assistant for the Center for Mexican-American Studies at the University of Houston, assisting with ethnographic analysis and other research on Houston Hispanics. Outside of academia, Mr. Oviedo has worked as a Harris County Pre-Trial Officer, a Patrons Service Assistant at South Texas College of Law Library, and as a Drum Instructor at Houston’s famed Percussion Center.
