FAQs

When should I see an academic advisor?

We recommend that students meet with their academic advisor at least 2 times each semester. The first meeting is general advising to discuss academic performance and degree planning. The second meeting is designed to help plan for next semester courses and registration.

How do I schedule an appointment with my academic advisor?

Students who work with faculty advisors in the college should contact their faculty advisor to make an appointment.

What should I bring to the advising appointment?

Your advising appointment will be more productive if you arrive with your questions ready. Having an up to date degree audit can help guide many advising conversations as well.

What is a degree audit?

A degree audit lists all of the requirements for your degree, including the number of credit-hours required for core courses and the requirements for your major. A degree audit notes whether courses and other requirements have been satisfied and indicates the courses and areas of study that are still in progress. Students are encouraged to use their degree audit report as a guide for planning academic coursework and for monitoring progress toward completion of requirements.

Students can obtain a degree audit online through DegreeWorks. Students are highly encouraged to make an appointment with an advisor for assistance in interpreting their degree audit, as well as to verify accuracy of the reports and to ensure that students have the most up-to-date information regarding their degree plans. A degree audit is not an academic transcript, and it is not an official notification of completion of degree or certificate requirements.

Do I have to be advised before I can register?

Yes. Students must be advised before they can receive their alternate pin to complete the registration process.

How soon in advance should I make an appointment?

While many advisors have walk-in appointment times, make an appointment as far in advance as possible. Appointment times fill up quickly, especially dates and times during the registration period.
