STI Scholars Program
Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is pleased to announce its “2009 Summer Transportation Institute (STI) Scholars Program” for past participants of STI (2008 STI). This is a new and unique program specifically designed for past STI students who liked what they experienced during their participation in the STI program and would like to experience engineering (specifically Civil Engineering) at a new level.
The four-week program includes various hands-on activities that would give you a first-hand look at several civil engineering design projects, interactive lectures, and presentations that highlight the profession. The program would allow you to experience internships at real work places, and visits to state of the art research laboratories. You will also get to spend time with researchers working on futuristic projects. The STI Scholars Program will have recreational and entertainment activities for the weeknights and weekends too. The Scholars will also get to mentor the current STI participants.
The 2008 PVAMU STI Scholars Program is scheduled to start on Sunday, June 7, 2009, and conclude on Thursday, July 3, 2009.
Approximately two or three 2008 STI participants will receive a scholarship which will cover the cost for participating in the PVAMU STI Scholars Program. The cost for participation is approximately $5,000 and the scholarship covers the entire cost thus the program will have no out of pocket expenses for the selected participants. The participants will be selected through a competitive process based on the criteria listed below. A parent, teacher, or counselor must nominate the student for the PVAMU STI Scholars Program.
Requirements: 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale; Interest in pursuing civil engineering; Must be a past STI participant. The application (2 pages); and (1) Recommendation form must be completed and submitted by May 8, 2009 along with (1) Nomination letter from a parent/teacher/ or counselor. Also please include academic transcripts, copies of standardized test scores, and an essay describing your interest in civil engineering.
