80.03 Granting Honorary Degrees Issued: August 16, 2001
1. Governing Policy
System Policy 11.07 sets forth the purpose, criteria, limitations on eligibility, and procedures established by the Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System, which the University must adhere to in granting honorary degrees.
2. Nominations and Approvals
2.1 Nominations and justifications for honorary degrees will be submitted to the Director of Development for review. The Director of Development will verify that the dossiers for nominees are complete and accurate.
2.2 Complete nomination packages will be submitted to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for review and action by the selection committee. Annually, a maximum of two nominees may be submitted for each category (i.e. public affairs, the sciences, humanities and the arts, scholarship and education, business and philanthropy, and social services).
2.3 Upon approval by the selection committee, nominations are submitted to the President for final review and approval. Nominations must be submitted to the President four months prior to the date being proposed for award of the degree.
2.4 Upon approval by the President, nominations are submitted to the Chancellor and Board of Regents for approval and authorization to award honorary degree.
3. Selection Committee
The selection committee for granting honorary degrees is appointed by the President and will consist of the following representation:
a. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (Chair) b. One Dean c. One Associate Professor (selected for a two year appointment, with a rotation of college or school being represented) d. One Full Professor (selected for a two year appointment, with a rotation of college or school being represented) e. President of Faculty Senate f. One representative from Student Affairs professional staff g. Vice President for Research and Development
3. Confidentiality
Confidentiality will be maintained throughout the process until the awarding of the degree.
