Summer 2013 Mini-Grant Request for Proposals

Proposal Statement

Prairie View A&M University announces the Summer 2013 Faculty Research Enhancement Grants Program. The program is open to Prairie View A&M University faculty and provides up to ten (10) $20,000 mini-grants to enhance the research environment at the University. Recipients of the grants are expected to prepare and subsequently submit proposals seeking external funds from agencies or other entities during the summer or during the 2014 academic year. The identity of the agency or other funding entity must be identified in the program narrative section of the proposal.

The period of performance is June 1, 2013 to August 31, 2013. The deadline for submission of proposals is March 25, 2013. Announcement of successful grant applications will be made by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies by April 25, 2013. The University encourages faculty to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their individual research while improving the University’s research environment. Please refer to the guidelines for proposal preparation and submission information. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (936) 261-1587

Proposal Preparation Instructions:

The final document shall be no more than 10 pages long excluding the budget and budget-justification.

1.0 Cover Page

1.1 A single page consisting of:

1.1.1        A concise title

1.1.2        The Principal Investigator’s name and title

1.1.3        The Department and College in which the faculty resides

1.1.4        The date of submission

2.0 Project Summary Page

2.1 Maximum length of 1/2 page

2.1.1        A description of the proposed research and goals

2.1.2        The research impact

2.1.2.1 student training

2.1.2.2 research linkages

2.1.2.3 continuation as a major project (the proposal development statement)

3.0 Project Description (Narrative)

3.1 Maximum length of 6 pages including figures tables and graphs

3.2 Should be double spaced typed with 12 point; Times Roman, Arial or Bookman fonts

3.3 Should address the intellectual merits and broader impacts of project which includes the following sub sections

3.2.1        A background and basis for the proposed activities

3.2.2        Facilities where the project will be carried out

3.2.3        Discussion of the proposed research activities

3.2.4        Impact (student training, potential to attract funding from other sources)

3.2.5        Plans to use results to attract funding from external sources*

3.2.6        Management and reporting plan

3.2.7        List any special equipment and its availability that will be used in the project.

4.0 Cited references

4.1 Maximum 1 page limit

5.0 Biographical Sketch

5.1 A one page biographical sketch of the PI

6.0 Budget

6.1 Budget request should not exceed $20,000

6.2 A budget and budget justification

6.3 Period of Performance – June 1, 2013 – August 31, 2013

6.4 Expenditures will be based upon state guidelines

6.5 Budgetary categories

6.5.1        Faculty release time

6.5.2        Student salaries

6.5.3        Research expendables

7.1 List all current grants and support as a page attachment (not included in the 10 page limit)

8.0  Evidence of a completed and submitted research regulatory compliance forms

 Deadline and Announcement

 The deadline for proposal submission is March 25, 2013

The mini grants will be reviewed and ranked on the following criteria

  1. Intellectual merit of the proposal
    1. Qualification of the proposer to conduct the proposed activities
    2. Potential for advancing knowledge
    3. Facilities for accomplishing the proposed tasks
    4. Time table for accomplishing tasks
  2. The broader impacts
    1. Potential for integration of research and education
    2. Participation of students in research
    3. Potential for establishing interdisciplinary linkages
  3. Potential for attracting external funding
  4. Budget
    1. Justification of budgetary items
  5. Regulatory Compliance Committee Review and Approval
