Dr. Emma Joahanne Thomas-Smith has served Prairie View A&M University and higher education for over thirty years as a teacher, mentor, administrator, and supporter. Recently, she was invited to share her views on access and equity on National Public Radio and on the Fox Television Network.
While at Prairie View, Dr. Thomas-Smith has served in many capacities, most notably Director of the Honors Program, head of the Department of English and Other Languages, Associate Provost and Director of Title III and Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. In her career at Prairie View, Dr. Thomas-Smith has been actively involved in the accreditation processes, long-range planning and master plan development. Because of her experience, she has been a consultant to many independent school districts and universities.
Among Thomas-Smith’s honors and awards are memberships in Sigma Tau Delta International honor society in English and Phi Delta Kappa, Education Honor Society, a selection as a distinguishable alumnae at New Mexico Highlands University winner of the Circle Award, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Clear Lake Chapter; and recipient of outstanding service awards from many student organizations, churches, and other organizations.
