Student Government Association

Robert A. Powell II - Student Government President 09-10On behalf of the wonderful students here at Prairie View A&M University, I would like welcome you to the official SGA homepage! I have the honor and privilege to serve as
the president of the highest ranking student organization: Student Government Association.

The Student Government Association is organized to be an advocate for the general student body, and possess the students’ confidence in believing that when change is needed it can be accomplished through SGA.

I would like to welcome back all faculty, staff, administrators and most importantly, my fellow panther students. I anticipate this year to be positively eventful and exciting. I am privileged to be able to lead our Panther family through this journey.

The ultimate goal this year will be achieved using a ‘bottom-up approach’. In my platform, I mentioned making the following four points a priority: Accountability, Inclusion, Transparency, and Commitment. We, as students want to see things put into place and say that we were there to witness it. Of course, we all know that things come with time, but I believe that with the hard work of our fellow student leaders and the voices of our student body, a difference can surely be made.

SGA is one way students can ensure that their voice is heard. However, a relationship with faculty and staff is not limited simply to the organization, its officers and senators. I challenge all students to seek out relationships with faculty & staff and take a vested interest in their education. We cannot become comfortable with hear-say and walking blindly; we as students must take responsibility and stand up as both individuals and a panther family. We must stand up as representatives of this fine university and build relationships with our administrators and outside organizations.

There will be many challenges, however we all have a responsibility and obligation to engender an environment that will stimulate the personal and professional growth of each other; thereby fulfilling the mission of this institution of higher learning. In addition, we have a responsibility to support President Dr. Wright’s vision that will move this university to greater heights. I am looking forward to this year and I encourage all students to get involved. Wishing everyone the best!
