The intern will be able to assist in the research and identification of assistive technology for specific handicapping conditions, which will develop the intern's leadership abilities. Diversity will be positively impacted through the student's attitude, tolerance and understanding towards persons with a disability. In addition, the intern will create and promote a supportive and accommodating environment for individuals with a disability.
Responsibilities include:
Installing JAVA, JAWS and other assistive technology (AT) into an existing computer laboratory
Research and identify market-leading, student-driven AT software for specific handicapping conditions (hearing impaired, dyslexic, spelling deficits, etc)
Support the assistive technology laboratory
The Summer Intern will assist in managing disability accommodations, educational coaching, outreach programming, consultations, and rendering assistance in the computer laboratory. Interns will view media and ADA federal guidelines and will become familiar in diagnosis, appropriate accommodations and support services, etc. Interns will also be able to observe individualized psycho-educational testing sessions with the diagnostician to identify learning disabilities.
