Spring Semester 2011

Congratulations Elizabeth J. Brumfield, M.L.I.S., (Distance Services Librarian), for the Northwest Houston Center for being the “first” library contributor to the Japan Library Relief Fund, as indicated by Michael Dowling of the American Library Association (ALA).

Dr. Rosie Albritton, John B. Coleman Library Director  with Helen Yeh and Delorse Hawkins accepts the FY2010 HUB Goal Achiever Award from Marie Robinson and Richard Hamilton.

PVAMU make a special effort during the past year to increase the PVAMU percentages of funds expended with African-American HUB vendors and Hispanic vendors. The John B. Coleman Library was one of the successful HUB Goal Achievers.

Financial Literacy @ Your Library is an informative session on improving your credit, balancing your budget, applying for loans, also how to use library resources for financial information.

Money Week Houston™ is an educational event offering the necessary products and information to families and individuals on how to make informed decisions when it comes to personal finance and investments.

The goal of Money Week is to help individuals Get Money Smart by providing free financial education events. Money Week is a coalition of approximately 200 partner organizations with a common goal to educate consumers about getting smart about savings and money management.

Women's History Month -  March 2011

The John B. Coleman Library of Prairie View A&M University is pleased to announce that Ms. Randryia Houston and Ms. Hannah McConn will be the Guest Speakers for the 2011Women’s History Month Program at the John B. Coleman Library of Prairie View A&M University. The National Women's History Project Announced that the  2011 Theme "Our History is Our Strength.” Ms. Houston, University of Houston graduate and Ms. McConn, University of Houston undergraduate are students from the  African American Studies Department and are a part of the Study Aboard Program to Ghana, West Africa.  Houston and McConn also are founders of the non-profit Pencil Project Organization. According to their website www.pencils4ghana.org, their  mission is to help alleviate the educational disparities that plague the children of Ghana, West Africa by providing them with educational tools and resources. The event will be held on Thursday; March 31, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in Public Event’s Room 108 and reception following program in Art Gallery Room 109.

Dr. Lee McGriggs -  Assistant Professor of Political Science, is having two of his classes (75 Students) participate in the Library’s Scavenger Hunt for Black History Month 2011. The students have one week (February 14-18, 2011) to locate information.  The Scavenger Hunt will include information found in Archive, Periodicals and the Reference/Circulation Departments. The students will receive certificates at the end of February 2011.
