Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

CHARGE:

To ensure that the use of animals in research is in accordance with institutional and Federal guidelines and to assist the faculty whose research and teaching activities involve animals. To review the care and treatment of animals in all areas of the Health Science Center, at least semi-annually, to assess compliance with Federal and institutional standards for appropriate care and treatment of animals. To keep appropriate records of reviews conducted to documents for the Health Science Center, USDA, and the Director of NIH that such reviews have been conducted and that any violations of established standards have been reported. The committee will require the review of research proposals in order to certify for the institution the necessity of using animals in research or teaching and to ensure that methods for the humane practice of animal maintenance and experimentation are used. The committee is responsible for the ongoing review of present use and future needs of the animal facilities. To review and advise annually on the status of the Occupational Health Program for individuals who have substantial laboratory animal contact; to review and advise on the status of the training program regarding the use of animals in research. To review and advise in the development of management priorities in the areas that have an impact on academic efficiency and effectiveness to ensure that the services provided by Laboratory Animal Resources reflect the needs and interests of the academic community. This committee is mandated by USDA and NIH policies.

Term of membership: Three years

Additional information: One meeting per month; two inspections per year; ongoing protocol review. The workload is heavy.
