REQUIRED COURSE READINGS
“Academic Writing”: This required reading describes the basic expectations for academic writing, i.e., writing that is intended for scholarly readers. Since all academic writing is analytical, this reading includes a brief overview of concepts covered in Analytical Writing, a required reading for ENGL 1123. All college writing involves critical analysis, the development of interpretive and evaluative arguments through a process of observing and interrogating relevant evidence. This reading lays out the key terms and expectations for writing that engages in critical analysis.
"More on Toulmin": This required reading supplements your book chapter on "Reading Appeals." It expands on and clarifies some of the central concepts of the Toulmin system for analyzing arguments, a system that you will be using to develop your own arguments in this class. If you purchased your textbook new, this reading appears as an appendix at the end of the book; if you purchased a used copy, it may not be there.
