Four Prairie View A&M students receive nursing scholarships

HOUSTON – June 9, 2009 – At a luncheon last week at the Junior League of Houston, the Healthcare
& Nursing Education Foundation (HNEF) awarded academic scholarships to four Prairie View A&M students dedicated to pursuing a nursing career. Scholarships were awarded according to academics, leadership ability, community involvement, financial need and commitment to pursuing a professional nursing career in the Houston area. Scholarship recipients receive up to $3,000 per year for their freshman and sophomore years and $4,000 per year for their junior and senior years to be applied towards tuition, books and/or fees.

The four Prairie View A&M recipients are Ana Alcantar, Francia Marshall, Jaimie Washington and Briandrea Williams. Alcantar will be a senior at Prairie View A&M College of Nursing this fall and will graduate in May 2010. Marshall earned a biology degree from Prairie View A&M in 1998 but will return to attend Prairie View A&M’s College of Nursing in the fall. Washington, the Vice President of Prairie View A&M’s National Student Nurses’ Association, will also begin at the College of Nursing in the fall and will complete her degree in May 2012. Williams is currently a freshman at Prairie View A&M, and she will apply to the College of Nursing; she also will complete her degree in May 2012.

More than 50 students are currently receiving assistance from the Healthcare & Nursing Education Foundation (HNEF), which was founded in 1994 and strives to make a critical difference in the health of the greater Houston community by providing nursing scholarships and community grants.
