On Thursday, April23, 2009, Ashley Mitchell and Ana Alcantar, both Semester III students were honored at a Reception at The Methodist Hospital as nominees for the Outstanding Student Nurse Scholarship. The Methodist Hospital Outstanding Student Nurse was established to recognize exceptional nursing students who demonstrate excellence in academic and community leadership. A student from the nine Houston nursing schools receives a $1,000.00 scholarship. The selection is based upon academic merit, documented clinical performance and community involvement. A student from Prairie View College of Nursing has received the scholarship since its inception.
Dean Betty Adams presented the nominees to the audience and awarded Ms. Ashley Mitchell the 2009 recipient representing Prairie View A&M College of Nursing. Dr. Ann McGinity, senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive at the Methodist Hospital, was the keynote speaker for the event. Ashley and Ana were accompanied by enthusiastic and proud family and friends. After the awards were given for each nursing school, attendees enjoyed the delicious array of refreshments provided by The Methodist Hospital.
About the Nominees
Our scholarship recipient, Ashley Mitchell has a GPA of 3.69 and is scheduled to graduate in May 2010 with a second bachelor’s degree as a nurse. Her first degree is in Kinesiology, which is a good complement to her nursing career. Mrs. Landson, her Semester I Coordinator, writes, “Ashley is attentive, articulate, professional and very motivated to become a nurse”. One of her Semester II Clinical Professors, Ms. Miller says of Ashley, “She is caring, compassionate, and able to establish a good rapport with patients, as well as a good leader and team player.” Ms. Mitchell has worked as a professional student nurse at Methodist Long Term Acute Care, Southwest Memorial Herman Hospital and this semester she is assigned tot MD Anderson Cancer Center. Ashley is a member of the National Nursing Student Association and the Prairie View chapter, as well as the Prairie View Student Advisory Council. The Council is composed of the student leaders from each semester. Ashley has also served as an officer in several student professional organizations. Additionally, she volunteers locally at the Fort Bend Community Fellowship Church, at the Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, and the Susan Komen Race for the Cure.
The finalist for the Scholarship was Ms. Ana C. Alcantar. She has a 3.36 GPA and plans to graduate in May 2010. She is described as, “an enthusiastic person with wonderful people skills,” by her clinical instructor, Mr. James Waters. As the Community Service Learner Coordinator, Mr. Waters states that he was most impressed by her desire to help others. He reports that Ms. Alcantar was the first student to contact him regarding helping those in need after Hurricane Ike, even though she did not have electricity herself. Ms. Bette Cozart, one of her clinical instructor, says, ‘She is dedicated, responsible, and exudes a positive and respectful attitude towards everyone. She has the knowledge of nursing skills, personal integrity, fitness, and conduct to practice nursing“. Ms. Alcantar is a member of the National Student Nursing Association, and the Prairie View Chapter where she has served 2 terms as sergeant-at-arms. She is a member of the National Scholarship Honor Society, and is fluent in English and Spanish.
