Educational Leadership
Prairie View A&M University named its College of Education, the Whitlowe R. Green
College of Education, in honor of an alumnus and educator whose $2.1 million
bequest became the largest individual donation in the University’s history.
Whitlowe Radcliffe Green graduated from Prairie View State Normal & Industrial
College in 1936. A champion of education, he faithfully served as an economics
teacher in the Houston Independent School District until his retirement in 1983.
Well-respected by his peers, he treasured his alma mater and placed a premium
on educating students. His outstanding contribution has provided scholarships and
educational opportunities for many students in a variety of majors. Through the
Whitlowe R. Green College of Education, Green’s memory will be cherished and
remembered by the students, faculty and staff who will benefit from his fine example
as an alumnus, philanthropist and educator.
Known for producing outstanding teachers, principals and education administrators,
the College is located in the Wilhelmina Fitzgerald Delco Building on the University’s
main campus. Education is the heartbeat of society and graduate students of the
College are trained to lead, administer and improve education in venues at all levels.
Graduates of the College are equipped to serve as skilled teachers, counselors, school
and district administrators, researchers, education program directors, policymakers
and college and university administrators.
Mission
The Whitlowe R. Green College of Education is the designated
teacher education unit of the University. The objectives of the
College center on the areas of pre-service, in-service and continuing
education of teachers in elementary and secondary schools.
The purpose of the College’s graduate programs is to help
practitioners in the field gain a mastery of knowledge and skills
in a particular area or discipline. Programs are designed to meet
the needs of a diverse student population including but not
limited to elementary teachers, subject area teachers, teachers of
children with special needs, counselors and those who aspire for
supervisory and administrative roles in elementary and secondary
schools. The graduate coursework also enables educators to
receive certification and/or endorsement in additional fields.
Individuals with degrees in fields outside of education who desire
to be certified as teachers may pursue graduate studies to meet
the state certification requirements.
