Letter from the Director

Dear Panther:

We are pleased to welcome our newest Panthers and returning Panthers to this upcoming academic year. This communication is provided to update you on the following important policy and procedure changes that will be implemented beginning the Fall 2012 semester.

  • All entering freshman students must have a final high school transcript on file in the Admissions Office before any aid will disburse to your tuition and fee account.

  • A new Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy will be in effect July 1, 2012. This policy is located on the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships website (http://www.pvamu.edu/faid) and will apply to students who enroll at PVAMU for the Fall 2012 semester.

  • Any student who fails to meet qualitative and/or pace standard requirements with 60 or more attempted hours will not qualify for financial aid and there is NO probationary period under the new federal standard.

  • Transfer students must meet the same satisfactory academic progress requirements as PVAMU students. All transfer hours attempted/completed will be included in PVAMU's attempted/completed hours.
  • To be in compliance with federal regulations, students must give priority to using refunds to purchase books and supplies relative to coursework.

  • If your financial aid process is incomplete, please be financially prepared to pay at least half of your total tuition and fees in order to be enrolled as an official student in at least six hours when receiving federal funding.
  • The FATV site is no longer available for financial literacy counseling. However, all financial literacy information such as entrance counseling, exit counseling, budgeting, and repayment of loans is part of the Financial Aid and Scholarships office consumer information Credit Literacy Confirmation.

  • Should you find it necessary to withdraw from the University, you must begin the process by obtaining a withdrawal form on the web (http://www.pvamu.edu/pages/2099.asp). You should also note that the date the Registrars' office receive the withdrawal form is the date the University will use to calculate refunds that may be due to the federal programs and/or the University.

  • Registration begins on August 25, 2012 for undergraduate students and August 27, 2012 for graduate students.

Thank you for joining the Panther nation and entrusting Prairie View A&M University to assist in realizing your academic aspirations. We trust that this information is useful and hope that the 2012- 2013 academic year is a productive and rewarding one.

Best wishes for a great year,

K. Michael Francois

Dear PVAMU Panther:

Please carefully read the contents of this very important letter, which addresses each student who expects to receive financial aid.

Financial Aid Awards

Prairie View A&M University cares about you and realizes that you and your family need to know what scholarships, loans, and grants you qualify to receive and when you will be notified of your award. Due to the uncertainty of the current economic climate, neither the State of Texas nor the U.S. Government has finalized commitments to provide allocations for student financial aid for 2011-2012. There is a chance that many aid programs will be cut by millions. That will affect students' ability to fund their entry into or continuation in college.

Unfortunately, PVAMU cannot at this time provide you a 2012-2013 financial aid award package. This means that perhaps your award package will be delayed. It is expected that financial aid at some level will become available. To the extent possible, you might consider being conservative with spending, reserving funds from employment, family contributions or other sources to assist with your educational expenses.

You can expect the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships staff to do everything possible to assist you in achieving your educational goal by providing financial aid for which students qualify.

Important Notices to Student Financial Aid Recipients
Effective Fall 2012, each student who receives any form of federal aid must attend class for each course by the census date, as indicated by term below:

  • Summer I 2012
  • June 6, 2012
  • Summer II 2012
  • July 12, 2012
  • Fall 2012
  • September 13, 2012
  • Spring 2013
  • February 1, 2013

Failure to have attended a class before the Census Date will result in a reduction of the federal aid award thereby affecting the student's status (e.g. full time student could suddenly become a part-time student; student could lose eligibility for residence hall occupancy, joining certain organizations, or holding certain offices)

All federal aid recipients must comply with the following:

  • Purchase required textbooks and other instructional materials needed for classes. Budgets will be constructed to include funding for this expense to the extent possible
  • Sign an electronic document at the time an award is accepted affirming intent to use funds received for educational purposes

Please share this information with your friends and family. Feel free to contact the Office of Student Financial Aid & Scholarships on the third floor of the MSC to discuss this information or any other financial aid related information.

Best wishes on a very productive and successful Fall Semester 2012,

K. Michael Francois
