Janie Baszile
Appointed by Governor Rick Perry, Janie Baszile serves as one of four educators to the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC). The fourteen member Board regulates and oversees all aspects of the preparation, certification, and standards of conduct of public school educators.
A 1973 and 1985 graduate of PVAMU, Baszile, began her career in the Beaumont Independent School District where she taught resource and behavioral classes at Lincoln Middle School. She joined TCTA shortly afterwards and became the faculty representative for her campus. Baszile joined the Galena Park ISD in 1981, and has served as the special education math teacher at the Gerald Cobb 6th grade campus since 2000. She has served her local affiliate in numerous capacities including president, membership committee chair, and CTA representative at board meetings. She is also TCTA Immediate Past President, having served as the associations’ statewide president for 2007-08.
Baszile says “When I started teaching, I didn’t envision myself sitting with the state officials discussing education matters, I was just so excited about teaching and thought I would learn everything I needed to know from my administrators. My idea of a teacher with a lot of experience was one that had been teaching for 10 years.”
Baszile is a life member of the PVAMU National Alumni Association and is a former president of the Houston Alumni Chapter. Alumna Baszile is active in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
