According to forensic professionals (Chemical and Engineering News, Vol. 79, #6, 2001), there is a growing shortage of qualified personnel training in forensic chemistry. The Council of Forensic Science Education has noted that while the number of forensic science programs at colleges and universities has increased recently, many of these programs were established with limited resources, insufficient personnel, laboratory spaced, and support facilities. The purpose of this activity is to establish a modern forensic chemistry laboratory so that chemistry majors and minors (i.e. biology majors) can be trained in forensic drug chemistry.
Established a Forensic Science Laboratory within the Department of Chemistry.
Developed forensic chemistry lecture and laboratory courses that were offered Spring 2008.
