Increasing Program Retention Rates by Enhancing Academic and Clinical Competencies
Students who fail courses or withdraw to avoid failure are considered “at-risk” for exiting form the College of Nursing without graduating. Retention of these students can be instrumental in reducing the nursing shortage and increasing the number of registered nurses in a discipline where minorities are underrepresented. This activity will provide structured learning experiences to enhance the academic performance of at-risk nursing majors. The program design will be a virtual tutoring modular format containing test taking exercises, critical decision-making, and, active face-to-face tutoring sessions.
The retention rate for students participating in the retention program during Spring 2008 was 83%. This was a 13% increase over the baseline.
The retention rate for students participating in the retention program during Summer 2008 was 92%. This was a 22% increase over the baseline.
During Spring 2008, 36 (77%) out of 47 (23%) students completed enrolled courses with a grade of C or better. This was 57% above the baseline.
During Summer 2008, 33 (89%) out of 37 (11%) students completed enrolled courses with a grade of C or better. This was 69% above the baseline.
