Prairie View A&M University, the second oldest comprehensive public institution of higher education in the State of Texas, was established in 1876 to serve the needs of “persons of color". As a land-grant institution, authorized by the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890, the University today has a multicultural student body of nearly 8,000 students. The PVAMU College of Nursing, located in the world renowned Texas Medical Center has provided excellence in nursing education since 1918. The first school of nursing west of the Mississippi to admit African-Americans, the College of Nursing today produces a multicultural and multiethnic cadre of professional nurses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (baccalaureate and master’s degree programs), who provide quality health care to citizens of Texas, the nation and the world.
