Writing Consultants
Joy Patterson
 I first worked as a Writing Center consultant as an undergraduate at Prairie View A&M University. I received a BA in English with a minor in Business in 2005 and then worked as a Marketing Representative for Surety Systems, Inc., before entering the English graduate program. When I am not in class or at the Writing Center I am keeping up with my eleven-year-old daughter Shelby and husband Robert. When there is any free time left I absolutely love to organize and do arts and crafts with any willing participant. My favorite books are Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo A. Anaya, and my favorite movies are the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The and Devil Wears Prada.

Ayana Young
 I came to Prairie View through a research program, Bridging the Gap to the Baccalaureate Degree (BGBD), geared toward exposing minority students to the field of biological research while helping community college students make the transition to a four-year university smoothly. In May of 2007, I graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a minor in Biology. I’ve been told that those two disciplines are an odd combination, but I’ve never thought so. While a student at Houston Community College, in fact, I worked in the writing center as an English tutor. As far as English goes, I’ve always wanted to be a writer. While briefly majoring in Biology, I became very interested in learning how to write grants which happens to be one of my future goals. I am currently in the second year of my Master’s program which coincides with being my second year as a graduate consultant in the Writing Center. My avid thirst for reading extends from the entire Harry Potter series to supernatural romance novels (anything by Christine Feehan or Sherrilyn Kenyon). The Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy M. Montgomery was my favorite childhood companion along with Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends. My favorite movies include: The Fountain, Happy Feet, Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy (Mmm…Orlando Bloom), Bed of Roses, Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, The Princess Bride, The Last Dragon, Secret Window, Napoleon Dynamite, Monster’s Inc., Serenity, Legend and Galaxy Quest, to name a few.
