Dr. Alex D. Colvin joined PrairieViewA&MUniversity in 2006 after receiving his Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction from TexasA&MUniversity in College Station, Texas.Prior to receiving is Ph.D., Dr. Colvin attended PrairieViewA&MUniversity as an undergraduate student and majored in Social Work.Following graduation from Prairie View, Dr. Colvin went on to the University of Houston where in 1997 he received his Master’s degree in Social Work.
Dr. Colvin’s previous work experience included 18 years of service with the Department of Aging and Disability where he served in numerous capacities including Clinical Social Worker and Administrator of two Residential programs.In his present capacity he serves as an Assistant Professor of Social Work in the Division of Social Work, Behavioral and Political Sciences.Along with his duties as a professor, Dr. Colvin also serves as the Coordinator of Field Instruction for the Social Work Education Program.
Dr. Colvin’s areas of interest in research include Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health Issues, and Diversity and Multicultural practices with minorities.His teaching areas include Introduction to Social Work, Multicultural Issues in Mental Health, Human Behavior and Social Environments, Social Work Practice with Children and Families, Social Gerontology, Human and Cultural Diversity Social Work, and Social Work Research.Dr. Colvin has presented work at conferences and workshops designed for the enhancement of social work practice as well as have written articles for publication related to culturally responsive practices in social work and education.
Dr. Colvin resides in Brenham, Tx.He is married to wife, Amy Colvin and have two children Allyson Colvin and Alex Colvin as well as have a family pet, a dog named paisley.
