COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers began their season on a positive note by defeating Centenary College at the Texas A&M Volleyball Tournament on Friday.

The Lady Panther offensive attack was lead by junior middle blocker Ashely Campbell and senior outside hitter Tamika Newman. Prairie View A&M defeated the Lady Gents 30-17, 30-24, and 30-25 capping off the sweep.

“Our girls played well today,” said PVAMU head coach Alicia Pete. “We still have room for improvement both offensively and defensively but I feel like the effort our team put forth was outstanding."

The victory comes on the heels of the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Preseason All-Conference selections. Prairie View A&M was selected to finish first in the western division with Mississippi Valley State garnering the first place nod for the SWAC’s eastern division. PVAMU’s TaCho Richard received first team All-SWAC honors at the outside hitter position.

“I’m extremely happy for TaCho as well as for our team,” said Pete. “It’s nice to see that we’ve gained the respect of our opponents in the conference.”

The Lady Panthers will now move on to face the Lady Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus-Christi. The match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start time on Saturday at G. Rollie Coliseum located on the campus of Texas A&M University.
