CYPRESS, Texas -
The Prairie View A&M men's and women's golf teams hit the links recently as they hosted the annual Prairie View Invitational and the inaugural Purple and Gold Panther Classic at Cypress Lakes Golf Club.  The men's team finished third and fourth in both events while the women captured second.

Playing in their only Houston-area match-up of the season, the men's team got off to a slow start in Sunday's Purple and Gold Panther Classic as they finished tied for fourth with Texas Southern after shooting a 346 in the one-round event.  Donald Cook was the top golfer for the Panthers as he shot an 86.

The Panthers regrouped on Tuesday and finished third in the Prairie View Invitational.  The invitational was originally scheduled for two rounds but inclement weather forced the cancellation of Monday's opening round.

After an uncharacteristic performance in Sunday's event, Prairie View's Joseph Daly bounced back in a big way and fired a 77 to finish second overall.  Daly parred 10 holes on Tuesday and recorded two birdies to lead the Panthers.  Avery Campbell came in 12th for the Panthers after shooting an 84 while freshman Randwahr Anderson placed 14th with an 86.  Cook rounded out the top 20 finishers for the Panthers as he tied for 16th with a score of 89.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff took home top honors as the Golden Lions captured both events.

On the women's side, the Lady Panthers used strong individual performances for consecutive second place finishes.

In the Purple and Gold Panther Classic, Aziza Glass led the way for the Lady Panthers as the Houston native placed second and fell one stroke short of the individual title with an 82.  Glass had a strong outing as she shot a 41 on both the front and back nines along with 10 pars.  Widyanti "Peni" Sanjoto tied for third with a score of 83 while Danetta Dunn rounded out the top 10 finishers for Prairie View with a score of 90 in addition to recording two birdies.

In the Prairie View Invitational on Tuesday, the Lady Panthers narrowly missed capturing the championship as Texas Southern defeated them by one stroke.

Sanjoto came out strong on Tuesday with a 41 on the front nine to take an early lead entering the invitational's final nine holes.  With second-place place finisher Stacy Martin of TSU and Glass on her heels, Sanjoto remained on top as she shot a 38 on the back nine to finish with a tourney-best 79 that included 10 pars and a birdie.  After a slow start, Glass also finished strong with six pars and tied for third with a round of 90.  Dunn posted a 96 while Cherrelle Barnes finished the event carding a 98.

Texas Southern took home top honors as the Lady Tigers captured both events.
