Sapphire Reid Named SWAC Volleyball's Newcomer of the Week

Prairie View’s outside hitter Sapphire Reid has quickly made her presence felt as she was honored as the SWAC Volleyball Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season following her notable performances against Houston Baptist and Southern.
Copperas Cove, Texas native amassed 19 kills, 18 digs, and three blocks as her Lady Panthers went 1-1- last week, including a 3-0 divisional win over Southern.
For the season, Reid has racked up stellar statistics as she is second on the team with 170 kills, averaging 2.07 per game. She is also second on the team with 16 service aces, while also third on the team with 168 digs, giving her an average of 2.05 per game.
“Sapphire is a welcomed asset to the team,” said head coach Alicia Pete. “She comes in day after day giving the team a renewed spirit and will continue to be a great utility player in the future.”
Reid, who was born in Germany, began playing volleyball at the age of 12 and her ability to play the game has grown tremendously as she was recognized with many accolades throughout high school. While at Copperas Cove High School, Reid started all four years, with her most notable accomplishments coming her senior year. Reid was named Team All-District selection, sparking her team to a championship run.
The Lady Panthers are currently on a six game road trip and are set to take on Southern University as they will go head to head for the second time this season. The match is set to take place on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 7:30pm.
