BOSSIER CITY, La. - The Prairie View A&M bowling team kicked off the 2009 campaign on a positive note with a third place finish in the annual Bossier City Shootout in Bossier City, La. this past weekend.
On the first day of the tourney in team play format, the Lady Panthers finished 1-3 with their lone win against SWAC foe Grambling State.After a disappointing first day of play, the Lady Panthers regrouped on the second day during Baker format and put forth a solid performance as they finished 2-2 with wins over Louisiana Tech and Grambling State.The Lady Panthers had an opportunity to close out Baker play with a 3-1 mark but dropped an emotional battle to Alabama State in the seventh game of the best-of-seven format.
Head Coach Glenn White was pleased with his team's performance after the opener.
"It was good to return home with a trophy from our first competition of the year," he said."We have some good freshmen that were getting their first experience of tournament play and we're expecting great contributions from them this season in addition to our returning players."
The highlight of the shootout was the performance of senior Phebe Jackson.A native of Baton Rouge, La., Jackson was named the shootout's MVP after finishing with a 193 average in four games during team play.Jackson also had the best game of the shootout with a high of 231.
"It was exciting to see Phebe step up as a senior and have an exceptional performance," said White.
The Lady Panthers return to action this weekend with a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C. to participate in the Down South Tournament hosted by Winston-Salem State University.
"We're looking to get better as the season progresses and we're preparing for the trip to Winston-Salem this weekend," said White.
