Prairie View-The Prairie View women’s soccer team destroyed their competition this week beating Alcorn State on Friday and Mississippi Valley on Sunday.

Prairie View didn’t stop there as they capitalized on Alcorn State’s lack of defensive pressure. Yosselyn Aguilar scored the next goal for the Lady Panthers where she went one-on-one with Alcorn State’s goalie Brownyn Leeming, beating her to the left.

Marrisa Woods who contributed two assists from corner kicks had her first assist in the twenty-fifth minute where she crossed it to the head of Brenda Castillo and put it in the back of the net. Minutes after Mayra Castillo put a beautiful ball into play up the left wing that Abigail Escobar was able to run upon, scoring the fourth goal of the game.

Ashley Carter’s goal in the thirty-sixth minute ended up being the only blemish for Prairie View’s goalie Jessica Garcia, who had an efficient evening making four saves.

Going into the second half with a 5-1 lead the Lady Panthers continued their dominance with a goal two minutes into the half. Marrisa Woods again from a corner kick provided a cross into the box that Abigal Escobar was able to get a foot on that ended up in the back of the net. Marrisa Woods added the final goal of the game where she was able to score on a corner kick that bent around Alcorn State’s defense to close them out with the final score of 7-1.

Prairie View continued play on Sunday afternoon facing Mississippi Valley beating them with a final score of 3-0.

The Lady Panthers got off to a quick a start in the third minute of play with a goal by Monica Diaz that was beautifully set up by Yosselyn Aguilar’s nice foot work. Getting up early Prairie View continued their offensive pressure throughout the game dominating Mississippi Valley holding them to only seven shots.

Jessica Garcia had another outstanding performance finishing the match with three saves. Brenda Castillo contributed Prairie View’s second goal of the afternoon capitalizing off a counter attack opportunity where the play started off a corner kick from MVSU that Monica Diaz was able to run at the Lady Delta Devils and produce a beautiful ball to Castillo. In the eighty-eighth minute of play JD Devany crossed a ball into the box that Abigail Escobar was able to score for her third goal of the week.

“The two wins were very big for us this past week,” said head coach Abe Garcia. “Especially the win on Sunday against last year’s conference champions it really shows where this program is headed, I’m really proud and feel we have come a long way.”

The team will return to action this Friday, October 23, to battle visiting conference foe Texas Southern at 6pm before heading down to Louisiana to play Southern on October 30.
