Friday, October 16, 2009 11:26 AM

Prairie View-After a sluggish match against Houston Baptist University, the Prairie View A&M women’s volleyball team rallied and got off to a great start to win in three sets Thursday night against Southern University.

Behind thunderous kills from outside hitter Cheri Lindsay and middle blocker Shaun Williams who combined racked up a total of 24 kills, the Prairie View women’s volleyball team was able to capitalize on mistakes Southern made early on in the match to claim their dominance.

“I think this was a vast improvement from Tuesday,” said assistant coach Emil Chuidian, referring to the team’s loss to Houston Baptist. “The girls really played well and communicated well tonight.”

The Lady Panthers came out with emotion and effort in the first set, turning an early 4-1 deficit into a 13-5 lead. The Lady Panthers used the surge to hold on to the momentum and win the first set 25-14.

Two thunderous kills in the second set by Shaun Williams, one of which ignited a roar from the crowd when it bounced off a Southern player that made the score 14-8. Prairie View continued to dominate the set and took it by the score of 25-13.

The team then jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and never looked back in easily taking the third set 25-16.

The Lady Panthers were spurred on by Denver, Colorado native Cheri Lindsay who led the team with 13 kills and also added 5 digs. Shaun Williams added 11 kills and 4 digs. SWAC defensive player of the week Jasmine Hale added 16 digs and one assist.

Other Lady Panthers to contribute included setter Erin Fondel with 28 assists, five kills, and seven digs. Latoya Taylor added four kills and two total blocks. Sapphire Reid recorded two kills and four digs.

The Lady Panthers will continue their season by going on a six game road trip which will start in Grambling, Louisiana on Thursday, October 21, 2009 at 6pm.
