Prairie View-Coming off a great tournament at Southern University this past weekend, where the Lady Panthers placed second overall, the Prairie View women’s volleyball team had one slip away Tuesday night at William J. Nicks gymnasium.
Leading 2-0 in the first two sets of play the Lady Panthers were unable to close out a relentless Houston Baptist side. The match ended 3-2 (25-23, 30-28, 16-25, 21-25, 9-15), where the Lady Panthers were leading for the majority of the match behind a great performance from Sapphire Reid who recorded 17 kills to go along with 14 digs, and two blocks.
The Lady Panthers rallied from an early 13-8 deficit in the first set and were able to crawl back and win the set 25-23. Going into the second set the Lady Panthers trailed for the majority of the time but were able to go on a 12-4 run that turned a five point deficit into a three point lead at 20-17. The second set was a back and forth contest, as the set was tied 17 times before Prairie View scored the final 3 points to pull out a gut-wrenching 30-28 win to go up 2-0.
The Lady Huskies quickly recovered and turned the match around by building a large early lead and taking the third set 25-16. The Lady Panthers were unable to turn the tide after losing the third set as the Lady Huskies then jumped out to a 7-1 lead and held off a late charge to take down the Lady Panthers 25-21 in the fourth set.
Houston Baptist continued their momentum and took the final set 15-9, disappointing the Lady Panthers.
“Team chemistry wasn’t there tonight,” said eleventh year head coach Alicia Pete. “We need to learn how to finish better.”
Erin Fondel recorded 45 assists to go along with two kills, 11 digs, and five blocks. As Latoya Taylor contributed 11 kills and three blocks. Shawn Williams also added 10 kills, three digs, and five blocks.
The Lady Panthers will continue their season on Thursday, October 15, 2009 against SWAC rival Southern at 7pm in Prairie View, Texas.
