Prairie View-Prairie View women’s soccer team hosted Grambling State and University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the past week of play.
The Lady Panthers opened up the week of play on Friday afternoon against Grambling State. Prairie View came out strong in the first half out- shooting Grambling State 11-3 ending the half tied at 0-0. Going into the second half the Lady Panthers came out with the same energy getting on top of Grambling scoring in the twenty-seventh minute. Yosseleyn Aguilar provided a ball that slipped through the defensive back line of Grambling that Brenda Castillo ran onto to finish a beautiful goal that put Prairie View on top 1-0.
With minutes left to play in the game, in the Prairie View goal box Grambling State was awarded a penalty shot in the forty-forth minute on a very questionable call. Angelica Singh was able to score for Grambling to tie the game up 1-1. The Lady Panthers were forced into overtime losing on a sudden death goal by Grambling putting the final score to 2-1.
Mid fielder Abigail Escobar led the Panther charge with seven total shots and two shots on goal, while Yosselyn Aguillar contributed five shots, one assist, and one shot on goal. Brenda Castillo recorded the only goal for Prairie View also contributing two total shots.
Coming off a tough loss to Grambling State the Lady Panthers hosted UAPB Sunday afternoon. Prairie View came into the match cold getting out shot by UAPB 13-3 in the first half. Going into halftime Prairie View found themselves trailing 2-0, Prairie View attempted to get back into the game but were unable to stop the continuous firepower from UAPB forward Nichole Parks-Powell who scored three goals in the match. Prairie View dropped the match 4-1 behind Brenda Castillo’s goal in the second half making it her second goal in consecutive games.
“We’ve had three good halves in two games against two of the top teams in our conference,” said head coach Abe Garcia. “We need to be more consistent to be able to see success.”
The Lady Panthers continue their season hosting Alcorn State on October 16, 2009 at 6pm.
