The Prairie View A&M Panther and Lady Panther cross country teams defended their home turf on Friday evening as they both won the annual Clifton Gilliard Cross Country Invitational on the campus of Prairie View A&M.
A trio of freshmen paced the Lady Panthers as they finished 1-2-3-4-5 to win the three-mile meet. Freshman Guadalupe Bustamante was the top finisher with a run of 22:46.48 while fellow freshman Angel Brooks finished second after clocking a time of 22:53.08. Junior Whitley Dobbins placed third with a time of 24:02.98 while freshman Branee Robinson completed the meet ranked fourth after running a time of 24:09.38. Prairie View’s Corrina Brown finished fifth (24:10.83) while Texas Southern’s Selena Fudge came in sixth. (24:42.98). Leticia Bustamante and Jelissa Phillips rounded out Prairie View’s contingent, finishing seventh and 10th respectively. Bustamante ran a time of 25:06.76 while Phillips ran the course in 26:55.26.
On the men’s side, Prairie View captured the top eight spots to bring home the title.
Errol Hampton finished on top as he ran the five-mile course in 29:15.64 while Adrain Davis was the only other Panther to complete the race under the 30-minute mark as he posted a time of 29:28.14 to finish second. Juan Morales, Jodale Buckley, Matthew Jones and Patrick Range came in one minute behind the top two runners finishing third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 30:02.21, 30:12.46, 30:12.68 and 30:27.49. Kipyegon Rutoh and Michael White placed seventh and eighth as Rutoh ran 31:45.75 followed by White’s run of 33:19.10. Devarius Wright was the top finisher for Texas Southern with a ninth-place run of 36:22.43.
