Wednesday, September 23, 2009 01:03 PM

Prairie View-The Prairie View A&M University Volleyball team lost another tough match. Despite leading for much of the match and giving themselves a chance to win, the Lady Panthers lost to Sam Houston State 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-23) at William J. Nicks gymnasium.

Prairie View coming off a similar match with South Alabama at the Lady Panther Invitational, was led by senior Shaun Williams with 8 kills and 3 digs and freshman Sapphire Reid recording 7 kills and 7 digs.

"It's frustrating to keep losing leads as we have been and I know this is an athletic team but someone needs to step up and be a leader," said Prairie View Head Coach Alicia Pete.

The Lady Bearcats used a 6-0 run to jump start the first set of play but Prairie View shortly crawled back into the set scoring four straight points turning a 6-0 run, to a 9-4 lead. Sam Houston managed to keep the Lady Panthers at bay the rest of the set, resulting in a contested but solid 25-20 win in the first set.

Prairie View took command early in the next game with aggressive play that allowed them to jump to a 12-8 lead. Despite an 8-3 run by SHSU, the Lady Panthers again battled to stay ahead until the Lady Bearcats took control of the set going on a 7-1 run to win the second game 25-20.

In the final game, Prairie View came out determined, building a 9-4 lead before the Lady Bearcats again used an 8-3 run, this time tying the game at 12-12. The lead would not grow to more than one for either team until the Lady Bearcats used a decisive 3-0 run to pull ahead and eventually closed the final set 25-22.

The Lady Panthers move to 4-11 overall record and are set to take on Grambling State Lady Tigers Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 at 7 PM in the William J. Nicks gymnasium.
