Prairie View-Prairie View A&M women’s volleyball team opened up the Lady Panther Invitational with a win against University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. The Lady Panther’s have defeated UAPB in two consecutive matches within the past two days.
Two ladies recorded double figures in kills, and Prairie View hit .204 in the match in a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-21) victory Friday afternoon at William J. Nicks Gym. Cheri Lindsay led the way with 14 kills and hit for .355 for the match and added six digs. Shawn Williams also contributed with 10 kills and hit for .615 and recorded three digs and four solo blocks.
“The girls played fair and executed well,” said head coach Alicia Pete. “We must keep in mind that we still need work and we must be prepared to play faster to compete in the games to come.”
The Lady Panthers jumped out to an early lead in set one on multiple kills by Lindsay and did not look back as the team won 26-24. Prairie View hit .323 in the set with 15 kills.
In the second set, Erin Fondel gathered her troops by recording 15 assists to give Prairie View a comfortable lead in set two. Fondel recorded a team high of 28 total assists one kill and three digs.
“I think this will be a good tournament, we will be able to compete with all the teams here,” noted Pete. “It will come down to who executes the best.”
The Lady Panthers will continue play tomorrow Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 playing two matches against Nicholls State at 10:30am and University of South Alabama at 2:30pm.
