Eleventh-year head coach Alicia Pete and the 2009 Lady Panthers volleyball team started their season at the Hurricane Invitational against the University of South Florida.  USF won the match, 25-12, 15-12, 25-8, on Friday afternoon in Coral Gables, Fla.

Junior Erin Fondel led the Lady Panthers with 16 assists in the tough-fought match against a very well-coached USF team that also included a great freshman debut by Sapphire Reid, who concluded the match with 5 kills to go with 3 digs.  Sharonda Marshall also contributed with a team-high 6 kills.

“I’m okay with the performance and the way we played.  We need to get our defense up to par and get together as a team,” said Pete.  “Being able to know if my returning players from last year are ready to compete and have picked up their performance from the past year was something  I was able to see today.”

The Lady Panthers played very closely with the Bulls with similar results in games one and two where the Lady Panthers fell short 25-12 in both games.  In game three, the team experimented with multiple line-ups en route to 25-8 loss.

“We have several new players and at one point in the game we had four new players on the court at one time,” added Pete.

With the loss, the Lady Panthers fall to 0-1 overall. They’ll resume action on Saturday against the University of Miami at 12:30 p.m. and conclude the Hurricane Invitational against Florida Gulf Coast University at 5 p.m.
