Letter from the Assistant Provost

Dear Student:

Whether you are a new or returning Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University (PVAMU) student, the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) is pleased to offer Web information as well as access to a well-trained staff who are prepared to assist with questions you may have about our student financial aid programs. As you review our Web information, please make note of any questions you have and call or e-mail us at faid@pvamu.edu.

We are committed to assisting our students and their parents in finding financial solutions to paying for college. We know that financial aid is not something you do every day, but it is what we do every day. So, we are here to help you navigate through the process and to advise you of the many different options available to you.

Unfortunately, many students and their families choose to apply for financial aid at the last minute. Waiting until the last minute causes the financial aid acquisition process to be perceived as tortuous.  Thus, here are a few tips to ensuring success in this process:

  • The most important thing you can do to eliminate problems in the student financial aid application process is to apply as early as possible. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available for electronic completion at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. We strongly encourage you to file electronically as the processing time is half of the time required for a paper application. For those who are applying for the first time electronically, you may request your PIN at http://www.pin.ed.gov. If you do need a copy of the paper FAFSA, you may call us and request that a copy be mailed to you. Completing the FAFSA will allow OSFA to determine your eligibility for federal and state need-based student financial aid programs. While the first responsibility for paying for college expenses belongs to students and their families there are a number of grant, loan and work programs available to assist with those costs.
  • Apply for Scholarships every year with the University, as well as, various scholarship providers.
  • In order to provide more timely responses to your application for student financial aid, OSFA will use your University assigned e-mail address to inform you that new information is available for you to review on the Enter Student Services option under the Panther Tracks System. It will be important to regularly check your e-mail for messages from us.
  • If you need help at any point in time, contact one of our Financial Aid Specialists by phone at (936) 261-1033, send us email, or come into the office in Prairie View. We are ready to assist you in finding financial solutions.  Please don’t pay for financial aid services that we can provide for free.

Our office has a staff of specialists available Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 5:00 to answer your questions. If you are on campus, you are welcome to visit us in the Memorial Student Center, 3rd Floor, or telephone (936) 261-1033 and ask for a specialist. Our staff looks forward to providing assistance as you plan for this very important part of your educational experience.

Sincerely,

Carlos R. Clark
Assistant Provost for Student Financial Aid
