| RE: |
Graduate Students |
The purpose of this memorandum is to ensure that the University is well informed in regards to graduate admission status and the processing of federal student aid.
Graduate Provisional Students (GP)
Students provisionally admitted to the Graduate School are eligible for federal student aid for only two (2) semesters. In order to receive aid, the student must be enrolled in at least six (6) hours. For Federal Stafford loans (Le., Federal Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans), GP students may borrow at the fifth-year undergraduate loan level. Hence, the student may be eligible for $5,500.00 in Federal Stafford Subsidized Loans and $7,000.00 in Federal Stafford Unsubsidized Loans.
At the conclusion of the two semesters, if the student has not taken the GRE/GMAT and does not have the adequate GPA to be classified as regular graduate student, he is deemed ineligible for additional aid.
Graduate Special Students (GS)
According to federal policy, students classified as graduate special are ineligible for federal student aid.
Graduate Certification Students (GC)
According to federal policy, students classified as graduate certification or seeking licensure are ineligible for federal student aid.
Graduate Regular Students (GR)
Students admitted as "graduate regular" are eligible for aid. In order to receive aid, the student must be enrolled in at least six (6) hours.
Clarification on Teacher Certification Coursework
According to federal regulations, a student may receive Federal Work-Study and Stafford, Perkins, and Graduate PLUS loans if he is enrolled in at least six (6) hours in required teacher certification coursework, even though it does not lead to a degree or certificate awarded by Prairie View A&M University. To qualify, the coursework must be required for elementary or secondary teacher certification or recertification in the state where the student plans to teach and must be offered in credit or clock hours (courses using direct assessment in lieu of credit or clock hours are not eligible.)
Optional courses for Professional Recognition or Advancement
Optional courses that the student elects to take for professional recognition or advancement, and courses recommended by Prairie View A&M but not required for certification, do not qualify. Prairie View A&M is required to document that the courses are required by the state for teacher certification.
