Roy G. Perry COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING OUTREACH PROGRAMS
There's An Engineer in You!
"People who enjoy engineering and are successful in it tend to share common traits. The dominant engineering aptitude is structural visualization - the ability to visualize 3D objects in your mind. Analytical reasoning, mathematical ability, and to a lesser extent, memory for design are the other aptitudes that correlate with satisfaction and success in engineering, " according to JETS. 12-2004 publication. | CE2I- Roy G. Perry College of Engineering Enhancement Institute |
|
The Roy G. Perry College of Engineering Enhancement Institute (CE2I) is an innovative and intensive summer bridge-to-college program designed to prepare students for the rigors of an Engineering, Computer Science, or Technology Curriculum and to aid with the transition between high school and college. The Institute is a five-week residential program, where participants will complete coursework in Math, Science, Technology, and Professional Development Activities. The Institute is math intensive. A math assessment test will be administered initially to determine the appropriate math placement. The program goal is to achieve a mastery of one math level higher than the student placed when he/she entered the program. The program will also introduce students to basic concepts in chemistry, physics, and computing. Students will experience professional development activities including field trips to area engineering and technology industries; personal and professional development seminars and workshops (i.e. time management, study skills, learning style inventories, effective use of study groups and seven (7) habits of successful people).

| STI- Summer Transportation Institute |
The Summer Transportation Institute (STI) caters to rising 11th and 12th grade students (completed 10th or 11th grade by Summer). The 2010 STI is redesigned with a new sponsor, The University Center for Transportation Mobility (http://utcm.tamu.edu). The new STI is a two-week, on-campus, learning opportunity for a diverse group of high school students. The program provides experiences for these students to enhance their awareness of career opportunities that exist in the engineering and transportation industry. The curriculum exposes students to new frontiers and adventures such as highway design, the transportation of people and cargo, intermodal (involving more than one form) transportation, safety, environmental issues and related career opportunities. Approximately 15-18 students receive a scholarship that covers the cost for participating in the STI program. The cost for participation is approximately $2,000 and the scholarship covers the entire cost, thus making the program free for the selected participants.

| BHSSC- The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp |
The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (BHSSC) is a free, academic program of The Harris Foundation, which takes an active role in shaping education in students entering grade 6, 7, or 8 in the fall of 2009. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are critical to society’s infrastructure for the 21st century and preserving that future requires an investment, such as the BHSSC, in our youth today. This camp program was originally developed as a collaborative effort of the Harris Foundation, the Houston Independent School District, the University of Houston (UH) and the Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU), designed to support historically underserved and underrepresented students with limited opportunities.
