PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers captured the 2006 Southwestern Athletic Conference volleyball championship after defeating Mississippi Valley State in the tournament’s final on Saturday, Nov. 11. This is the team’s first win since 1999. Trailing Mississippi Valley 2-1, PVAMU used a gutsy, come-from-behind effort to secure the conference title after the first three games of the match. Prairie View battled back to take the matches next two sets by the scores of 30-27 and 15-8 in the fifth and deciding game.
“I’m extremely happy with the way our team performed today,” said head coach Alicia Pete. “Our players played their hearts out and they truly deserve all of the credit for this title. It all started with everyone on our team believing that we could win and after that, everything else fell into place for us.”
The Lady Panthers went undefeated in tourney play and beat defending conference champion Alabama A&M in game eight of the tournament. Since joining the SWAC, the Lady Bulldogs had previously emerged as champions from 2000 to 2005. Ironically, Prairie View’s last volleyball title came in 1999 before Alabama A&M’s long reign.
Prairie View will move on to represent the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the 2006 NCAA Volleyball Championships. The Lady Panthers will play at a site and time that has yet to be determined.
