Admission Requirements

 

Students wishing to apply for admission to the College of Nursing must follow the following admissions process. The admissions process requires application both to the University and to the College of Nursing.

 

Admission to University

 

1. Automatic or regular unconditional admission into the university as defined in the University Undergraduate Catalog. The acceptance letter for enrollment in the university does not automatically qualify students for acceptance in the nursing program.

2. Test results obtained by “B” rule or “C” rule are not accepted by the College of Nursing as meeting admissions testing requirements.

3. Any student with a Provisional Admission status must meet the Admission Release Policy requirements prior to being classified as a pre-nursing major.

 

Admission to Clinical Studies

 

All students who have met prerequisite requirements for nursing must apply to the College of Nursing for admission to clinical studies. Students are accepted into clinical studies in the spring and fall of each year. Admission to clinical studies is competitive and on a space available basis. Deadlines for application are March 1st for fall admission and October 1st for spring admission.

 

1. Completion of all pre-clinical course requirements with a minimum grade of “C” and a cumulative grade-point average of 2.60

2. Completion of all nursing support area prerequisite courses in the bio-physiological and psycho-sociological sciences and nutrition (courses with a prefix of CHEM, BIOL, PSYC, SOCG, HDFM AND HUSC) with a minimum grade of “C” and a cumulative grade-point average of 2.75.

a. No support course may be repeated more than once to achieve a passing grade of “C”.

b. No more that two support courses may be repeated.

3.  All natural science prerequisite courses must have been completed within 5 years and all support courses must have been completed within 10 years of the date of admission to the clinical studies. The assessment of dated credits and courses requiring updating will be made upon receipt of a completed application to the College of Nursing.

 

In addition, Licensed Vocational Nurses must submit the following credentials:

 

1.    Validation of graduation from an accredited LVN program, one year of nursing experience, and current LVN licensure in good standing with the Texas BNE.

 

Process for Advanced Placement:

 

1.    Upon admission to the LVN program, LVN student may apply for seven (7) hours of advanced placement through credit by examination.

2.    Advanced placement is achieved by obtaining a satisfactory performance score on the following National League of Nursing (NLN), Acceleration Challenge Exams (ACEs). A. Care of the Adult Client B. Clinical Pharmacology

3.    Upon successful completion of the above (NLN-ACEs) challenge exams, the student is eligible to enroll in the first 12 credit hours of the program; the student will receive an additional 10 credit hours in congruence with the Texas Articulation Model

4.    After completion of the first 12 credit hours of the program, the student is eligible to receive an additional 10 credit hours in congruence with the Texas Articulation Model.

 

Acceptance to Clinical Studies

 

1.  Completion of the application process for consideration for admission to Clinical Studies.

2.  Receipt of written notice of the final admission decision. Applicants must respond within two weeks of receiving the notification of acceptance in order to guarantee a space in the program.

3. Submission of a current complete physical examination, a negative Tuberculin Skin Test or chest x-ray, and documentation of appropriate immunizations; including Hepatitis B vaccination.

4.  A current CPR certification issued by the American Heart Association.

5.  Acquisition of the student professional liability insurance coverage.

6.  Satisfaction of a criminal background check and drug screening.

7. Final admission decisions are dependent on space availability. Applicants not accepted for admission to the Clinical Studies may be placed on a waiting list for the semester of application only. Applicants not admitted may reapply at the next admissions period.
